Thursday’s interview with Ms. Proper of So Proper Entertainment was just as I expected. She’s a good friend of mine, but I also believe that she is an inspiration to so many people out there. It’s funny how I scheduled her to inspire females, but everything about her swag, her business ethic, and her brand is more of an inspiration to all people, something that was rightfully mentioned during the show.
Her ability to yoke her creativity into her music, her marketing, and her internet radio show Rated “R” Radio, as made her a force to be reckoned with. That is probably why so many people either love her or “hate” her. She is not immune to the callous comments and sub-tweets by grown men and women who feel that she is undeserving of the respect she receives, but she presses on industriously. She puts fire into everything she creates, preying on the self-conscious and insecure who pretend to want this life. I’m constantly engrossed in her ability to make everything so cool.
Admitting in her interview that she was self-conscious herself in the dawn of her career, let’s everyone know that she is not above being human. That inspired so many people to know, that they to can break from the bond of feeling apprehension and just release themselves into their art. She turned her uncertainty into pure unadulterated talent, fearing nothing now. She admits that the change came with practice and an insidious need to perfect her craft and her brand. She has been pit against all types of people, taking her name from local to national through her appearance on 106 & Park. I call her a “Beast” and a “Monster”, laughing at what visually appears as a small feisty young woman, but to many she’s over 6 feet tall.
The kind of attitude that is expected of Ms Proper is only one that can be adopted by years of passion and perseverance. When you love something so much, as she does her brand and business, that mind-set is to be expected. Even she admits it wasn’t always like that. You can joke about her arrogance, but truthfully, you should adopt it. That “arrogance” is what makes people fear her, as she has never been challenged on a microphone. It’s that outlook that makes people wish and desire to be put on a bill, which has her name on it.
The same way you root for your favorite athlete, praying the make it to the championship every year. The same way you get excited when your close relatives graduates high school, gets married, or has a baby, is the same way I watch her grind in anticipation. I know its coming. Even if it’s not in music, I know she will embark on huge things that will make her happier than she has ever imagined. However, it is because she is such a wonderful person without all that behind her name is the reason why I love her as a friend. It’s because she doesn’t display attributes of attention thirst, or celebrity. She displays honor and respect for her craft and business and the ideas of others. She will always be one of my favorites. I suggest you take a listen and become a fan, otherwise just slide quietly to the side and pout by yourself.
