“I like to consider myself a “Glamazon” a beautiful, thick, tall, voluptuous woman who is confident and is proud to show the world that big is definitely sexy. I like to categorize my personal style as “Bold n Rethickulous”. Because my style is what you will see a slimmer girl would wear and what most curvy women will be hesitant to wear.”

Theresa Powell Featured Style on GaptoothDiva.comTheresa admits to having an obsession with shoes, like every other woman in the world. She says, “I love shoes, shoes, shoes, the taller the heel the better. While standing 5’9, already once I put on my heels, I don’t ask for the attention I naturally demand it.” Theresa’s wardrobe consist of Body Suits, fitted Jean, skirts, dresses, business attire and other clothing that maintains my personal style. She says she still keeps it classy and tasteful. Theresa says, “I look forward to the future, because with my determination and persistence, I’m determine to take my Career as a Full Figured model to a higher level. Amanda Lewis, a native of Richmond, VA grew up with a love and natural knack for the arts. She participated in everything from dance, art, theater, and cheer leading, to sports and choir. Though talented, she was very shy in school. While attending Virginia State University to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and certificate in Fine Art, she began to break out of her shell. Just a few years later, she moved to Virginia Beach to pursue her Master’s degree. While there, she began to take a serious interest in modeling and decided to pursue it.

“I would describe my style as artistic, elegant, and tomboy. I am not so much a girly girl (as I like to run with the boys) but I do have that natural elegance about me. I’m not afraid to put a pair of boots or sneakers with some really classy accessories. Since I live for art as well, I always put my individual flare on things, which is usually a touch of lavender!”

Amanda Lewis on GaptoothDiva Featured StyleAfter a few test shoots, the young aspiring model was able to sign with three local agencies. Since then, Amanda had ripped the catwalks of the infamous New York Fashion Week, done jewelry shows for Laura Luxe, been in a commercial, music video, and a host of other projects. Amanda feels as if she has only gotten her feet wet though and hopes to make it to the top. She has traveled to Germany, Italy, Austria, France, and Honduras, and will be hitting the streets of Africa Spring 2013. In the years to come, she plans on being a Doctor, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Artist, Entrepreneur, model, and only God know what else!

When asked about the obstacles she had to overcome, Amanda responds…

“I’ve mostly had to overcome rejection time and time again to get to where I am today. When you are different and deplore fitting in, people don’t always accept you. Rejection is hard and something I will never get used to but I can admit that it makes me stronger each time.”

Amanda Lewis on GaptoothDiva Featured StyleAmanda unique features is what set her apart from all of the girls who participated in the first DashA’veri photo shoot. Her humble spirit and graceful demeanor spoke volumes about the kind of young woman she was and what she aspires to be. I asked her what advice would she give to young girls and/or what advice she would give to her younger self, Amanda answered, “I would say, you will face many obstacles in life but with the help of God you can overcome them all. It’s okay to be afraid sometimes but never let fear control you. Write out your dreams, pray, make a plan, and execute! You are not inferior to anyone and you are amazing just the way you are.”

That’s the kind of advice we could all use in our lives. Please make sure you follow and support this young lady, because her spirit is so beautiful just like her presence.

I’esha GaptoothDiva is Named One of the New Faces of Ivie Rose Boutique, Curvy with an Attitude

GaptoothDiva at Ivie Rose Photoshoot in D.C.

After doing the Glam Gurl, Inc. Fashion show  in Richmond, I was contacted by Sherra and Tiffany Brown about doing a photo shoot in the Maryland/D.C. area, for their fabulous clothing line Ivie Rose. I rocked two of their outfits in the fashion show, so I was totally excited to see more of what they had to offer. I packed up the Hubs and my beauty kit and hit the road.

If you ever been to a fashion photo shoot before, it can be tense. You have to look good, stay looking good, take photos, change clothes, and some more craziness. However, despite all the hard work, everyone made it fun. This group of beautiful women, including the remarkable photographer Marc Wyche, who took those amazing pics at the fashion show, created a stellar team. Among the group was makeup artist and entrepreneur Treya of http://www.treschicmakeupartistry.com from Columbia, Maryland. I’m talking about a true squad of beauty professionals here!

GaptoothDiva at Ivie Rose Photoshoot in D.C.

I really enjoyed myself, as I mingled with some incredible people who truly love what they do. Among the group were some funny girls and my fellow models like Zakiya Payne, Erica Wright, Wema Enofe, Aysha, Michele, and Temeka Brown. I thought they were all beautiful and remarkable in their own way, bringing that extra dose of uniqueness that only they could bring to the shoot. Sherra and Tiffany chose a great group of females to wear their clothes and touched on a diverse market of women, and I am honored to be included in that.

Glam Gurls, Inc. Holiday Fashion Show 2012, Celebrated Plus Size Beauty and Confidence

Glam Gurls 2012 Fashion ShowI’ll be honest, with all the things that I’ve been through these past couples of months (baby, health, loss, etc.), I wasn’t too sure if I could make it out to this event. However, because it was Naneen Johnson’s first fashion endeavor with Theresa Flatts, and my love and respect for the plus size community. I rebuked any obstacles that I could foresee, put my big-girl panties on and strutted with the beauties of Glam Gurl, Inc. This fashion show was for the graduates of the Glam Gurl, Inc. modeling school, who paid to be trained and educated on the ins and outs of full-figure modeling.

Even if you’re not interested in being a model, trainings such as these are meant to instill confidence and self-esteem in the participants. It is my hope that all curvaceous women, plus size or full-figured, learn to appreciate their God-given bodies and beauty, and not shy away from life as if they are anything other than amazing. Therefore, when an opportunity like this comes along, where I can support them and promote this, I’m always down for the cause. When I was requested to walk the runway, I paid the baby-sitter and headed out to what was an overall success.

Glam Gurls 2012 Fashion ShowThere is a diverse group of women, who all are beautiful and unique in their own way. Modeling with a group like this gives you a sense of community and appreciation with our large community. People assume that most women can’t get along and that models are all narcissist. However, I have never experienced any negativity when modeling with these women. They are some of the most compassionate and genuine people, who will help you in a second. You don’t have to stress about what you bring to the table, because backstage is filled with positive feedback, accolades, and constructive criticism that is only meant to propel you into being the best plus size representative you can be.

I look forward to more of these as the New Year rolls around. If you’re looking to connect with women similar to yourself, learn new ways to carry yourself better as a full figured woman, and to make friends, I definitely suggest opportunities like this. Even if you don’t see yourself as a runway model professionally, it’s still a great experience. They even give love to our little divas, which were showcased as “Glammettes” on the runway. They were cute and showed that you are never too young to learn how to be a great model.

Shout out to Candice Nicole who sang beautifully and looked amazing and to Earl Fleming who can moderate anything and make it exciting. I also give hugs and kisses to Danielle Flatts, who managed all those women behind the scenes from a chair, and did it all with her big precious smile. I love these amazing women.

Inspiration: Rae Williams Pushes Past Adversity to One Day Be Top Model

GaptoothDiva Interviews Rae Williams, Plus Size Model

I worked with Rae last year, at an Unforgettable Woman Fashion show and she immediately blew me away. Her personality was so positive and she smiled the entire time. While some of us were frantically rushing to change in and out of our outfits, just to run on stage for two minutes. This girl was as calm as a cucumber. Her bright eyes and warm spirit, made me want to share her story. I thought she was too beautiful a person to keep her away from my audience. You need to be inspired by her.

Her given name is Rachel Williams, but she often goes by Rae Williams. She is a young aspiring Full Figured Model from the Maryland area. Along with being a model, she is also a full-time junior at Towson University studying to receive her degree in Creative Writing and Public Relations.  Rae realized her passion for modeling as a teen;, and has been committed to making her dreams a reality since high school.  However, she has faced many challenges, such as her height. Many photographers and events in her area are not appreciating the fuller figured model demographic. Despite these challenges, Rae slowly but surely rises and continues to gain experience and work.

GaptoothDiva Interviews Rae Williams, Plus Size Model

To her advantage, she has the support of her entire family and the majority of her friends who are always in the background cheering her on. The majority of Rae’s work comes from the New York area, where she soon hopes to reside.  Rae has had the honor to be featured in Skorch Magazine, Fashion News Avenue Magazine and Bella Noir Magazine, and in Plus Boutique Eddy&Bri’s catalog website. Along with many other accomplishments, she has an extremely bubbly personality, and loves to laugh and have fun. Rachel enjoys trying new things and pushing the boundaries of her success.

GaptoothDiva Interviews Rae Williams, Plus Size Model

Rachel has faced discrimination, being the victim of fraud and being underestimated by photographers and casting directors. Rae pushes past adversity and the hardships of being a young adult pursuing her dreams because she not only wants to make a name for herself. She also wants others to see that it can be done. She firmly believes that anything is possible if you work hard enough and do your absolute best. The obstacles that are faced are just tests to see how hard you are willing to work, and if you can continue to push pass the tears.  Rachel continues to work hard no matter what obstacles she faces because she believes in herself and she has the support from her family that propels her to continue trying.

I believe that Rae is an amazing example of perseverance. In an industry that can be discriminating and often snide, she continues to work toward something she wants. If she can do it, then we know that many more can as well.

Fashion Night’s Out Ashley Stewart Event in RVA

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.comAnother year comes around and the annual Fashion Night Out rears its head. As I suspected big shopping centers like Stony Point and Short Pump promote their retailers FNO events, but other than that… silence. Disappointed I almost fell back, yearning for something much different. It was at the brink of calling in the towel that I hear something about a Curvy Fashion Night Out event at Ashley Stewart’s, in White Oaks Shopping Center on Laburnum Ave. Thrown together by Theresa Flatts and Ashley Stewart’s Manager Danielle Davis, which from their own testimony was not an easy task. They promised a night filled with raffles, discounts, a runway show and performances, and I wasn’t about to miss this for the world. I think many of the other stores in the shopping center should take advantage of the Fashion Night Out crowd, so it was exciting to hear Ashley Stewart took their chance this year.

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.comHosted by the lovely and incomparable, Earl, the runway show proved to be equally lovely. From denims to spicy girls night out ensembles, Ashley Stewart displayed their latest looks of the 2012 fall season. Collections filled with plenty of textures and metallic, I loved every outfit. Earl pointed out that peplum was really big this season, and that couldn’t be more correct. From great dress silhouettes to curve hugging looks with printed leggings or jeans, this Ashley Stewart showed variety in this trend.

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.com

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.comThe great thing about all the low prices and discounts were the bevy of accessories on deck. There were unique and fabulous statement necklaces under $25. Their earrings, bracelets, rings, and other things range from basic tones to more colorful and designed pieces. Since I’m addicted to accessories, I promise I will be stalking these displays on a consistent basis.

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.com

The event was supposed to be from 6 to 9pm, although I arrived at 6:30pm I don’t know if I missed the performance by talented local singer Candice Nicole. I did however; catch the runway show that was flooded with several beautiful and charming local plus size models. Coordinated by Ms. Naneen Cottrell Johnson and makeup done by Michelle Renee and Cecily Hickman, the models did a fantastic job highlighting this seasons hottest Ashley Stewart looks. Nevertheless, the event ended too early in my opinion. I wished I could have seen more, because it truly was a great show.

Ashley Stewart White Oaks Shopping Center Featured on GaptoothDiva.com

I suggest all curvaceous dolls looking for great fall looks for work, nights out, or just casual weekends make a b-line for Ashley Stewart in White Oaks Shopping Center. There were some great looks that appear more youthful and trendy, than what is offered at some other locations. From what I hear, this is not the end of fantastic events coming straight from this location. Be on the lookout for even more events dedicated to promoting the community in a positive way.

How to Attend a Plus Size Model Call and Audition in 7 Steps

I'esha GaptoothDiva Runway Walk in Zulane

Nowadays, the fashion industry is giving more and more respect and acknowledgement to the wonderful work that the plus size/full figure community has done. This means great things for so many women, who once thought they could never be models. Although our size is accepted and more opportunities have opened up, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t educate yourself on how to stay a step above, in your quest to be a plus size model.

Most recently more labels, fashion houses, and even retail boutiques have requested full figured beautiful women to attend open houses, model calls, and auditions for their runways shows and fashion campaigns. This means a greater chance for plus-size/full figured women to represent more on the runway, on the catwalks, and in print.

There are a couple of things however that you need to know, especially when starting out. If you are interested in getting involved in plus-size fashion and you want to start in the local scene, below is a list of all the things to consider before auditioning. It may seem like an easy accomplishment, considering you have the attitude and you can walk in heels. However, strutting down the hallway in your stiletto heels and pretending to be as “diva-fied” as Beyonce, Tyra, or any fabulous woman on television is not enough to boost your career or your true potential.

  1. Self Esteem is Key – Before you go on the audition check your self-esteem at the door. You may already think you qualify if you are considering entering into an audition, but self-esteem is displayed in many ways. Do you freeze up in front of large crowds? Do you second-guess yourself? Are you affected by comments, whispers, and snickers? These factors all measure the potential a model may have. Remember you may have to walk in front of a large crowd, most of whom will not be quiet, can you take the pressure of people commenting, yelling, screaming, or laughing when the time came. There will be other women in the show, some of these women can be very snide and competitive, would you be able to maintain professionalism and still work the runway. Before you decide to jump into this industry, talk to someone who knows and can share with you the pros and cons of getting involved. It takes a strong woman to display her self in front of others, with no fear or hesitation. Make sure you are that kind of woman, no questions asked.

  1. Hygiene – This should be understood, but you won’t believe how many women come to an audition without first properly taking care of themselves. Of course you want to shower and be clean, while making sure you don’t stink. However, what about shaving those armpits and legs? How about making sure your nails are polished and trimmed in a decent shade. Makeup is based on individual factors. Most of the time fashion designers would like to see you with a little makeup as possible, to get a sense of your true beauty. However, currently, some women are far more self-conscious without it. If you need to cover up some facial discoloration, make sure it looks as natural as possible. Please don’t cake it on and make yourself look like a drag queen. Stick to colors and shades that compliment your skin tone, and never, ever use black eyeliner around your lips for any reason at all.  Since we are in the age of weaves, wigs, and natural hair, always be sure that your hairstyle is something simple, as to not distract from the Designer’s work. Loud and trendy hairstyles are cute to some; however, the wrong color and style may clash with the fashions you are wearing. Remember, although you are the model, it’s about the clothes… not you.

  1. Dress with Some Sense – For some reason, many women think model call/audition and they think to come in their club clothes. There are lines of women dressed in body conscious dresses too tight to breath, shoes made for looking that they can’t walk in, and attire that would make you think they wanted to be in some rapper’s video. On the other hand, some women show up as if they did not intend on being selected at all. It’s as if someone woke them up that morning and forced them to audition by gunpoint. There has to be a balance. No one said modeling equated to being slut-like and sexually appealing, remember there are mostly women in here… who are you trying to seduce? However, you do want to display your beauty and sense of style. Keep it simple. Leggings are always a good choice as it shows your true shape and curves with a nice top and some decent heels of a workable height. Make sure you check their guidelines, first. Jeans and a shirt are also appropriate choices. If you want to display your legs, you can wear a dress, but check the appropriate length and be sure to touch up those legs. This tip is all depending on the rules of the model call and audition. If you don’t know, it’s always best to air on the side of caution and keep it casual, stylish, and simple.

  1. Bring Everything Required – Check the posting, make a call, email, or ask around. Any real model call and audition will have some information posted about what you should bring with you when you arrive to audition. Whether it’s a photo, your measurements, a resume/portfolio, make sure that you have everything you need when you get there. I always say it’s better to have too much information with you then not enough. If they don’t need then at least you have it. However, it would really suck if you didn’t have what you need, and plenty of girls who arrived that did. You don’t want to miss your opportunity, because of one little oversight.

  1. Your Attitude – Remember I mentioned it takes a strong women to be a plus size model, well I was not kidding. Although Full Figured women have come a long way, there a still a few who are adamant about holding the community back, with their negativity and cattiness. As a plus size model, you may experience some women who will try to compete with you, for no other reason but their own insecurities. Although you all may have passed the audition stage, there will still be women who feel like they need to compete with you, especially if you so a lot of potential and great promise. Just maintain a positive and non-confrontational attitude. Don’t be easily affected by their actions and try to keep the morale of the show and it’s participants as high as possible. You will be asked to do more shows in the future, if you are less drama and more hard work, regardless of your skill level.

  1. Communication – Most models starting out have other obligations that they must tend to, although they are trying to accomplish their dream of modeling. Some women have families and children, full time jobs, school, and other community obligations. The important thing to do is to communicate with your event organizers and fellow models, always, especially when you won’t be able to make it to practice and rehearsal. The Designers and the Coordinators have scheduled and arranged each scene specifically based on how many women they have and which ones they had to walk or shoot. If you decide not show up on any given day, then you could jeopardize the show and your ability to be in it. Let the coordinator know if you won’t attend a practice, or if you will be substantially late. The worst thing to do is to hold everyone up the day of the show, because you have no idea what to do and/or what is going on.

  1. Pay Attention – No matter your skill level or experience, I can almost guarantee that any model can admit that she learned something about the industry or about herself each rehearsal and every show. It’s inevitable. This is an ever-changing machine, which comes with various factors, while you work with diverse personalities. You may gain some skills at one show, and realize a weakness in another. That is the evolution of becoming great. However, if you take it as a joke each time you’re involved than you will never graduate from being just a local model, to someone worth talking about. No matter how much you know, allow yourself to be taught something new. There is nothing wrong with learning more than one way of doing something. Coordinators want to know that you are educated in the basics, but often times they may put a spin on something. Come with an open mind, and be prepared to learn. I hope that when you become well versed enough, you can pass what you learn down to someone else and inspire him or her to become a plus-size/full figured model as well.

Now congrats on your choice to join the brave, bold, and voluptuous on their quest to being modeling superstars. Always remember you are representing a brand, a designer, and a label. Put your best foot forward at all times and always show confidence. Good luck!

Happy Holidays from GaptoothDiva & Family, 15 Things That We Should Change for the New Year!

GaptoothDiva & FamilyIt’s been a crazy year and from what my horoscope tells me, it’s going to get even crazier next year. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate every single one of you rocking with me for so long, it’s a blessing to have the support of great people. I’ve enjoyed my work with GaptoothDiva.com, GaptoothDiva radio, GaptoothDiva TV, and all the other projects that I’ve touched. I can’t wait to embark on some new things and make you all more motivated and even more inspired.

If you’ve been under a rock for the past couple of weeks, my best friend/husband and I just found out we are having our second child next summer. Believe me, with all the work I’ve been doing, that was the last thing I expected to happen, but we are excited nonetheless. More children, means more abundance, so like I always say #bringiton. I just warn you all who are super busy in your dream chasing, to avoid sex on the floor if possible, because that’s how we were caught up. Ok, enough with the TMI!

We are the process of expanding our brand and coming up with some new ideas to share with you all. Since we’ve been married for almost ten years, yes, I did say that, so expect some stories from our relationship that may help you down the road of finding and maintaining love. I feel so blessed these days, and when you got it good – you should share how you did it for those who need it. Now, we aren’t any Steve Harvey’s over here, although I love him dearly, but we have it right the first time and want you to do the same. Therefore, that should be fun for the 2012 New Year and I can’t wait.

For all my fashion and Beauty heads out their, expect to see more of that on the website as well. I will still keep http://www.FYourStyle.blogspot.com as my outfit post location, but I want to share with you some great unique and often handmade things I find from RVA and all around. The music will still be here also, but geared with more intense interviews and better artist. If you know anything about independent artist, they are a lot. I don’t want to saturate the game with interviews with every Tom, Dick, and Yung Harry, so we will be more stringent on who gets interviews and why. I want you to be inspired, not annoyed.

Gaptoothdiva.com is going to include more of my own life lessons that I’m learning. I’m not perfect, so I feel like people need to hear from someone like them. I don’t pretend to be some infamous socialite with nothing going for me but my sexual assets. Although I love my body and my style, I have much more to offer you than that. I want you to gain something that you can apply to your own lives, through interview with fantastic people, through events that I attend (substantial events), through advice and tips, and most importantly, through experience. That’s what I’m good at and that’s what I believe we need.

So, while I spend the next two weeks wrapping this final big project, spending quality time with my loving and supportive family, and trying to desperately to come up with non-ghetto baby names, I want to tell you all how much I love you. I love your ambition and you ability to overcome your present by always looking to the future.

My dream is that in 2012, we will:

1. Stop hating on human being with no super powers; if you have faith then you will get your chance.

2. Stop creating garbage and stuff you think the hood wants to see. Our work should be from the heart.

3. Stop comparing yourself to other people. Do YOU for a damn change!

4. Start having a purpose. Write down your purpose and look at it everyday as a reminder. Why are you doing this?

5. Pursue at least one new thing that you have always wanted to do. Live with no fear of failure. However if failure happens, don’t let it break your stride.

6. Stop exploiting ourselves for attention and public discussion. I’m tired of seeing naked chicks on my timeline, especially ones with children.

7. The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Consider what vices may be limiting your potential. Many of you love weed, these days a lot of you, but don’t indulge so much that you stop your dream before it even starts.

8. It’s ok to have a family and be in love. Don’t live so much in the public eye that you forget that you have a real life and real responsibilities. Fame is a goal, but fortune is a privilege.

9. Be honest to yourself and others. They say the world is going to end. I don’t want it to end with bullshit in my mouth… period!

10. You never know who you are going to inspire, so don’t discount your fans no matter what age, shape, or background they’re from. Talk to everyone and support anyone, your next leg up might be from the unexpected.

11. Stop trying to be a bandwagon success. Don’t do a Busta Rhymes and get signed to every new hot label, or jump on the next lap of the most successful person you know. Create your own lane. At the end of the day, you’ll have fewer checks to write.

12. Don’t discriminate or make false accusations, get you info straight. Twitter people are famous for listening to their timeline and not doing their own research. If you saw on your TL that Obama did something, go check your facts before you comment. Stop listening to the grapevine.

13. Fall in Love. With all this hard work and grinding, it so refreshing to have someone that can hold you, tell you you’re doing great, and even give you a truly honest opinion. I break bread with those that loved me when I was starving. There is nothing like true love in your life.

14. Include your kids. I need to adhere to this more. My son is the biggest motivation of why I do most of this. I should have him involved more, and you all should too. People like to see that they can relate or that your life is inspiring. Not everything has to be glitz and glamour, but real reality (not Kardashian reality) is entertaining.

15. Never quit! This year has had its high’s and lows, believe me. However, I don’t regret anything, except being more open about it. I shut down for a while. I was worried and anxious most of the time. I should have spent more time enjoying the ride. You may not always have money, friends, and fly clothes to go out to events, but you still have vision. Keep going in your dream. Don’t let obstacles get in your way, no matter how big or small. After everything is said and done, you can look back and really talk about what you made it through. It will be hard, no doubt, but nothing worth having ever came easy. This is your dream/goal, who going to check you, boo (*Sheree voice*)???!!!!

I hope you are inspired to make some great changes for the New Year, because I definitely am. I can’t wait. While I’m busy working on these things and doing the family thing, I may drop a few videos here and there, so stay tuned on www.Youtube.com/GaptoothDiva and be sure to subscribe.

Divas In Designs Documentary…. I Am Every Woman!

There is a diverse group of plus size women who walked in the Divas in Designs Fashion Show in Richmond, Virginia. This video touches on a few of those  testimonies as to why they decided to get into modeling and how it makes them feel.

For the purpose of inspiring other women to join a sisterhood organization that promotes full figured beauty from diverse backgrounds.

Easy Ways to Jump Start Your Dream and Feel Better About You

When I first got the inspiration to create GaptoothDiva and work towards my dreams, it was an unexpected occasion. I was so used to doing things a certain way and I never believed I would do so much in my life. I really don’t feel like I started living until I found my purpose, a fact that I’ve always shared with people I want to motivate. However, it may not come as “easily” to others as it did me. We get so accustomed to living out our daily routines, that we don’t even consider changing things and making your life more fulfilling. Listed below are some ideas I have about changing your life dynamic and feeling more happiness and accomplished in your life.

Who needs a Makeover? – So many beauty and fashion sites suggest that you purchase something to make yourself feel better after a rut. The truth is, new clothes and makeovers do boost your self-esteem. It doesn’t have to be brand new. I get off on thrifting and finding creative items that fit my style. I also like to make some things, which to me means so much more. It’s not about being materialistic at all. It’s about putting something on that compliments your style and makes you feel more positive about your external appearance, which will reflect internally. That’s a fact.

Do Your Research – It may sound like common sense, but you won’t believe how many people get an idea or thought and just run with it with no homework behind it. They don’t research other people doing what they are doing, mostly because everyone thinks they came up with that idea. They don’t reach out and ask for assistance, consultation, or training because they don’t want to invest in the time and energy to learn how to do what they want properly. It’s a waste to pursue your dream without first knowing what direction to go in. When you are trying to reach a goal, you need GPS to find your way to the next milestone. Who drives without knowing where they are going? Dumb ass people that’s who.

Build Relationships – Now that you decided what your goals are and how to do it, it’s time to network with like-minded people. Find people on Twitter, Facebook, and Linked In who are doing what you are trying to do, know about resources you can use, and can introduce to people that will help you go further in your dream. Be honest and upfront, never pretend to be more experienced or more lucrative than you are. It’s important to show how valuable your skills are to the people you are networking with, but eventually the truth will show its ugly head. It’s always important to keep it real, so that you and your new networking partners can build and grow together.

Learn Always – No matter how great you are at what you do, you still have to constantly educate and train yourself on new and more interesting ways to be successful. I look at how an athlete has to practice, condition, and train. Look at your dream as an athletic competition that you must be on point for. Everyday should be about pushing yourself more and gaining new knowledge on your expertise. If you aren’t learning new ways to keep yourself relevant in business or to capture the attention of the potential fans, then you will be doomed to eventually fail. Some old school entrepreneurs and creative minds do the same things repeatedly for years, not ever realizing how technology and new ideas have passed them by. Their clientele slowly dwindles, because everyone is looking for new and fresh ideas. Wouldn’t you prefer the shiny new style that is innovative versus the old-fashioned creative who is stuck in his/her ways?

Be YourselfThe internet has made it easier to keep up with your favorite personalities and business minds. However, it’s not their intention for their fans to become their clones. You can’t adapt someone else’s style or craft and call it your own. You will never be that person, so just be you. It’s harder for some people to accept themselves as they are and work with what they got. We live in a world where “If only I had…” seems to make everything better. Consider your life and memories, your journey, and all that you had to overcome. How many times have you felt alone? Now think about someone on the other side of the world going through that exact same thing. Wouldn’t it be cool, if someone could relate to your story, by you grasping that your own style and story deserves a platform? Everyone is already taken; try playing the role you was born with.

Enjoy The Ride – When people start to recognize your name, it’s time to go even harder to keep it in their minds. Don’t just chill on publicity and ride it out. This is the time to amaze them more, time to shine and show what you are capable of. Embark on new opportunities, relinquish all your fears, and jump into your dreams. You met the right people, you developed the confidence, but now it’s time for you to make more opportunities for yourself using the work you already put in. While everyone is partying and bullsh**ting, it’s time for you to grind.

Do It for the Right Reasons – Your purpose is yours and yours alone. Your destiny and your journey are what define you as a person. If your overall goal is to be rich and famous, that attitude will reflect in your work. If your goal is to be a martyr or trailblazer, people will see that in your efforts. Discover what is motivating you to go hard in your dream. If your motive and intentions are not in the more positive of lights, be honest about that and re-evaluate your journey. Everyday in your quest, your reason should push you harder each day. Being an artist and creator, I’m constantly thinking about my true reason for doing what I do. If it doesn’t inspire or motivate, most likely I show little to no interest. Your “Why” should captivate you daily, giving you the fuel to keep going.

Although, it seems like everyone and their mother wants to start a business, write a book, create an album, etc. there is still room for your legacy. Just keep in mind why you want to do what you plan to do, have a plan of course, and stay around people that will support you and propel you. Everyday won’t be easy, sometimes you may feel like giving up, but your dreams die with you, your work can last forever. Don’t just talk about be it.

GaptoothDiva Motivation – Full Figure Model Colleen Stovall from Philadelphia, PA

As we, all know I’m a size accepting, thick chick loving, and motivational women empowering type of chick, if that makes any sense. LoL!

I really feel more full figured women should step away from life’s proverbial wall and into the forefront, where they belong. We are the majority, yet we hide in shame as if we’re alone. I can’t get into enough, that’s why I coined myself as the “Plus-Size Showstopper”, because you will never again catch me acting shy, especially due to my size.

However, I’m not alone! In my work as GaptoothDiva and with some of the Full – Figured Modeling I’ve been involved in, I’ve met some fabulous women who share my same feelings about size acceptance and great self-esteem. I want you to be inspired and motivated by some beautiful young ladies who display their beauty as either a full time hustle or a part-time dream starter. Either way, these women are phenomenal. You can feel more confident, that you are not in this alone if you represent fashion, plus or full figure women, or modeling as a whole.

Today’s Motivation Comes from….

GaptoothDiva Inspiration: Domonique Revere-Lincoln (@EmpressDNique) of Empress Lingerie, Entrepreneur and Full Figured Model

Domonique Empress Lingerie Featured on GaptoothDiva.comCool, gorgeous, focused, and stylish were all the words that came to my mind when I modeled along side Dominique. Her presence on the runway would leave an insecure woman in shame, but her warm personality let’s you know she is not intimidating but inspiring. She accepts her size and her beauty as her own, which is exactly why I’m featuring her on my site. I feel with her testimony, not only will more Full figured women see a martyr that they can relate to, but find some of the characteristics that should have within themselves.

I first met Domonique at the Curves at Full Throttle Fashion show in 2010; she was promoting her lingerie line, Empress Lingerie. I credit her as being the first person who made me walk out in public in a lingerie ensemble, one of the most exhilarating experiences in my life. Back then, I had no idea she modeled but I could tell that she appreciated her curves and wanted to ensure that the girls wearing her clothes did too. I wasn’t scheduled to walk in her set that day, but after seeing me during rehearsal, she kindly asked me to try on one of her pieces and of course, I agreed. It was amazing, but not half as amazing as her contribution to this year’s Tropical Diva Fashion show. In this show, she wasn’t the designer but the fierce runway vixen, strutting down the catwalk with her God-given voluptuous frame, advocating for the “above-average” woman in us all. A breath-taking and inspiring experience, I couldn’t wait to feature this week’s beauty for some bona-fide motivation.

Domonique Empress Lingerie Featured on GaptoothDiva.comI asked Domonique what inspired her to start Empress Lingerie and what can Full Figured women gain from shopping there? She answered, “As a “real size” model, I was inspired to start Empress Lingerie for woman like me, the above average woman! As full-figured women, many times we find ourselves searching high and low for that perfect piece of garment, particularly lingerie that makes us feel sexy inside and out. We have what you are looking for! Never again will you have to ask, “Does this make me look fat?” When purchasing from Empress Lingerie, our mission and goal is to provide you with pieces that are flattering and add that extra pizzazz, to your sleepwear/costume collection! We are also currently working on swimsuit line, that too promising to please and caress each and every curve of a woman’s physique.”

Domonique Empress Lingerie Featured on GaptoothDiva.comThe message she wants people to gain from her testimony and her online store, Empress Lingerie is simple. She wants people to “Give their Curves the Royal Treatment”. Embrace who they are and never settle for anything but the best. Shoot for the moon and should you miss, the least you will do will find yourself amongst the stars. Dream big!

Now of course, with any positive endeavor, there is always someone or something trying to stop you on your road to success. However, a vibrant personality like Domonique won’t allow obstacles to deter her. When asked what obstacles she had to face and how she overcame them, she answered “There have been obstacles at every turn of my journey; People telling me that I was not good enough, too big to be a model, that I “just didn’t have the look.” My strength came in not believing those lies. I used all those negative comments as fuel to propel me to the next level. Yes, you are not going to be what everyone is looking for and will experience quite a few doors close and people that say “No”, but the reality is that all you need is one “Yes” to catapult you/your career to the next level.”

Domonique Empress Lingerie Featured on GaptoothDiva.comSo what are some of the greatest accomplishments about what she does? Domonique says, “Every opportunity, appearance, interview has been a great one! One to network, gain exposure and let the creative juices flow. Recently, I have had the opportunity to be apart of FFFweek (NY), Tropical Divas (VA), 17…Days of Fashion (PA), The Philadelphia Fashion Collection (PA), as well as, working with esteemed plus models and organizations, such as Terri Murray, Nicole Zepeda, Anthony Henderson and 4H4 Awareness.

The lessons I’ve learned have been to be present in the moment. Sometimes you must go out of your “comfort zone” and push yourself to the limit, while also standing your ground and not compromising your beliefs, morals and values. Also, ask questions, exchange emails and phone numbers, knowing that advice, opinions and opportunities are abundant and sometimes it’s all about who you know, as well as, being in the right place at the right time.”

I am so proud to have the opportunity to feature such a dynamic personality. Her attitude and her perseverance is the reason why much success is coming her way now and in the future. So what advice can she give for other up and coming Full Figured Models and Entrepreneurs? Humbly she states, “My advice would be to create your own path and destiny. Modeling and owning a business is hard work, but you have to set your self apart from others, creating a competitive advantage. Know that there is room for everyone and you should focus on your goals and what you set out to do. What is meant for you will be.”

So what’s in your destiny?

With Empress Lingerie, your journey begins here… Treat your spirit, mind and body to a complete and extraordinary reviving, experience with sexy, luxurious lingerie from Empress Lingerie. Whether you’re looking for a gift for the special person in your life or just something to slip into after a hard day at work, we have something for everyone. At Empress Lingerie, every woman is a queen.

GaptoothDiva Fashion Files – Theatrical Inspiration

GaptoothDiva Fashion Files - Theatrical Inspiration
TopShop sleeveless top
$48 - topshop.com

Wet Seal striped tank
$23 - wetseal.com

It’s not enough anymore to just create an outfit. These days you have to piss people off. I watched two movies that inspired both of these sets. I really adore them. Any bold chick could rock this and make it look fierce. This is not for the “self-proclaimed trendsetter” who is too afraid to wear something not in a magazine editorial. This is for that bad girl who could care less what you thought about her ensemble, in her mind she’s perfect.
I especially love the top hat with lace, I would wear that everyday if I could.

GaptoothDiva Real Talk – Pursuing Your Modeling Dreams at Any Age… Where Do You Start?

*Actual email received by a reader of www.GaptoothDiva.com:

“Name: NYC Plus Size Sensation

Website:

Comment:

Hi, I just ran across this website, the thing is that I always wanted to be a plus size model, but now I’m 32, I live in NYC, and really want to do print modeling, like for a magazine or billboards, I’m from the fashion capital of the world, yet I do not know where to start, any suggestions? Thanks so much”

First off, congratulations on pinpointing what passion; then starting the process of going after your dream. The fact that you’re now 32 years old, should never be a reason or excuse. Now that you have determined what you want, it’s time to learn and work. The industry is very hard to break into, but once you start to get a few influential folks to pay attention, your work ethic and your professionalism will take you up from there.

One of the first things I would suggest, especially since you live in New York City, is research auditions and casting calls in your area. In most cities, this information isn’t just posted anywhere, so you will really need to do your homework. Check out your local Craigslist Advertisements (under talent, event, media, TV, etc.), there are many promotional companies, magazines, and clothing designers looking for plus size beauties to fill there pages and websites.

I would also set up an account with ModelMayhem.com, which is a premiere website connecting models with photographers, designers, stylist, make-up artist, and fashion show producers and publications. It’s an amazing way to promote you as a plus size model. Get some great photos taken (preferably by a professional or a person with professional equipment) and compete your profile. I would suggest that you really pick your pictures carefully, because they have a tendency to not accept your profile if they don’t like photos. They have to ensure that people are serious about their careers and not just setting up accounts all willy-nilly.

Now it’s time to start connecting with people in the industry that you want to work. Attend local events that you’ll look up via Google.com, Facebook, eventbrite, and through Twitter accounts of the people you follow. Use social media to find out what’s going on around you and make friends/follow the people that will help you get to where you want to be. Don’t let your ego stop you from getting a great opportunity. When you connect with someone, send them a message telling them who you are and what you’re trying to do. Attend modeling and fashion networking events, shows, and openings. I attended a fashion last year, just to support someone. A designer came from back stage to ask me if I would be interested in walking in the show based on how I looked in the audience. Opportunities are everywhere; you just always have to be ready.

Speaking of ready, take care of yourself and your looks. Women seem to think because they are a Plus Size Model they can eat and do what they want. Well, that is such a misconception. You still have to eat right, and exercise to prolong your career and maintain your natural beauty. Grab a friend and start working out and walking. Make sure you keep your face clean when you’re not out, and drink plenty of water. The industry wants the most bang for their buck, so if you are taking care of your physical appearance at all times, then they won’t have to spend so much on Photoshop and digital re-touching.

It’s not guaranteed that you’ll be the next Tocarra or Mia Amber, but you will book some very cool shows & print work if you put in the work. Surround yourself around people that can take your dream to new heights. Meet new connections and keep in contact. With phenomenal social media capabilities we have today, anyone can start pursuing their dreams in no time at all. Connecting with people in the industry, maintaining yourself and your attitude and going hard at each show no matter the size, you could very well be the next full figured sensation. I hope that when you do make it big… you won’t forget the diva. Lmao!
