There is a common misconception surrounding holistic health, black consciousness, and political activism. However, all negative ideas were diminished if you attend this years Happily Natural Day Festival held at southside’s Muhammad Mosque on Saturday, August 28th 2010.
This three day festival touched my family and I in a matter of minutes. When you walk in you are greeted by warm and friendly faces, scents of exotic varieties from the incense, body oils and delicious food, and the sight of beautifully decorated natural hairstyles from eccentric locking styles to gorgeous Afro. Now although you did not need to rock the natural look in order to participate in the day’s activities, however you will definitely be considering it once the day was done. There were some of the most beautiful African-American people in the building, promoting a healthy and fruitful lifestyle for everyone in attendance. If you were there you were compelled to learn about the history of your culture and about the seriousness of changing your eating habits and living in order to battle common diseases and health issues within the African-American community.
The GaptoothDiva enjoyed a workshop conducted by Vincent Ellis White, Author of “The Fully Seasoned Man’s Relationship Recipe”, where the author moved the crowd discussing how women should be more selective about the man they fall for, due to men’s ability to “play and slay” our gender. The workshop was very informative and the audience was able to purchase a copy of the self-proclaimed tutorial/confessional for a discounted price.
I also was able to enjoy live and positive hip-hop music while I shopped for handmade jewelry and clothing. I viewed handcrafted creations from Scarvelous by Sola and Dr. Yew from Yew-360. It was so amazing! I rocked my creative t-shirt from Martone of Bornatty Clothing and Accessories, who always comes through with her stylish originals. I especially enjoyed the speciality gourmet dip from Jaudon Delectables, provided by none other than Ms. Moon of the Croaker’s Spot. Delicious and tasty, these sauces and dips are sure to be highlight at any dinner party.
The event was a successful and in my opinion, a benefit to the community. All this hard work is credited to Brother Manifest, otherwise known as Duron Chavis and the Happily Natural Day Organization. They put together one of the only weekend events (3 days long) that cater to family, health, style, music and entertainment, activism, and community service.
Please be sure to check out the website and attend next summer’s festival with the family.
